Mary Helen Huddleston Miller

Guest Speaker

Mary Helen Huddleston Miller is a proud Kentucky native and has been a resident of Shelbyville for almost 60 years. She is a graduate of Caverna High School and Western Kentucky University, where she earned a BA in English. Ms. Miller began her career of public service as a teacher of Latin and English, spending 5 years at Shelby County High School (known to her students then as Mrs. Wilson).

In 1973, Ms. Miller began a new adventure with the Legislative Research Commission (LRC) in Frankfort (the administrative and research arm of the Kentucky General Assembly). Throughout her 12 years with the LRC, Ms. Miller advanced from Legislative Analyst to Committee Staff Coordinator to Assistant Director. She then spent four years as the Chief of Staff and Secretary of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection under Governor Martha Layne Collins and then as Legislative Liaison, Chief of Staff, and Governor's Alternate to the Appalachian Regional Commission under Governor Brereton Jones.

Ms. Miller's outstanding contributions to public service have been recognized with numerous awards and accolades. She is a Leadership Kentucky Alumni (Class of 1985), Shelbyville Citizen of the Year 1998, and the recipient of the Vic Hellard, Jr. Award for Public Service to the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1999.

Ms. Miller has served on various state and regional boards, including the Kentucky Tomorrow Commission, Waterfront Development Corporation Board, and Regional Airport Authority Board. She has also held positions on the Kentucky Long-Term Policy Board, Kentucky Historical Properties Commission, and Executive Committee for the Kentucky Historical Society, where she served as Vice President.

During the course of her life, Ms. Miller has made significant contributions to her Shelby County Community, serving on the boards of the Shelby County Community Theatre, Shelbyville 2000 Committee, and Shelby Development Corporation; as the first Chairman of the Shelby County Community Foundation; as the President of the Caryatid Book Club; and through the Vestry of St. James Episcopal Church.

From the halls of the Capitol to boardrooms right here in Shelby County, Ms. Miller has spent decades as living example of what it means to be a “Servant Leader.” We are fortunate that Ms. Miller is willing to share with our Leadership Shelby Alumni her experiences and insights on leadership and public service.
